Active English 2013-2014 introduces students reading and enjoying classical English plays. We aim to nurture interest and appreciation of drama from an early age through active regular participation by students. Drama is considered universally to be the best way of achieving these aims.

In this year, the Seals Players Foundation Company will demonstrate how learning English through drama can be fun and enjoyable.

The programme is implemented in 4 Primary Schools and 4 Secondary Schools and run for eleven months from September 2012 to July 2013. The schools are:

We are working on Aladdin and his Magic Lamb for primary schools, and Odyssey for secondary schools.

Aladdin and his Magic Lamp

From the book of One Thousand and One Nights comes the tale of Aladdin and his Magic Lamp! Aladdin is a poor, lazy boy who has never worked a day in his life. All changes when Aladdin meets an African magician who is pretending to be his uncle. The magician tricks Aladdin into getting a magic lamp for him from a magic cave. Aladdin, trapped in the cave, discovers a powerful jinni in the lamp that will do anything for the person holding it. With the help of the jinni Aladdin becomes rich and marries the beautiful princess. But the African magician still wants his lamp! Aladdin must overcome the magician if he is to live happily ever after! The story is set in a Chinese city, which is often forgotten or changed in adaptation but we will keep to it in our adaptation.

The Odyssey

Brave Odysseus, the conquering hero of the Trojan War, is all set to go home to Ithaca after ten long years of war against the Trojans. But he hasn’t reckoned with the Gods on Mount Olympus. Poseidon, God of the sea and brother of Zeus, is furious with Odysseus for destroying his favourite city, Tory. He causes a storm in which Odysseus is forced to land and overcome many adversaries like Circe the Witch, Cyclops and the Oxen of the Sun. Finally he makes it home only to find that many men are trying to marry his wife Penelope. In the end Odysseus wins his wife and inheritance by bending his great bow at a contest.

Students are also learning other generic skills from the work in drama. They are learning how to express themselves, they are learning how to solve problems during rehearsals and productions, they are learning task management as they prepare for rehearsals and performances. Certainly they are also learning teamwork as they work with each other and their tutors. In addition they are learning communication skills and critical thinking as they go through their work.
